Date: April 18, 2008
Advisory Type: Water Quality Advisory Notice
Details: WATER QUALITY ADVISORY— ENTIRE SERVICE AREA
In conformance with the Turbidity Notification Program implemented by Interior Health Authority (IHA), Black Mountain Irrigation District has issued a WATER QUALITY ADVISORY (WQA) effective immediately for customers within BMID service area.
On Sunday, April 13, 2008 a slug of water with higher than 1.0 NTU turbidity entered the BMID settling ponds. The water has been moving through the reservoirs and will be in the water distribution system by Friday afternoon, April 18, 2008. BMID had experienced operational difficulties with our WTP, but it is on-line again and clearer water is being produced.
Please note that the water is disinfected with chlorine, there is minimal bacteria in the source water prior to disinfection at the current time, and that there are no measurable coliforms in the distribution system. We are required to notify our customers of the elevated turbidity levels under the current IHA program.
Interior Health recommends that children, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, and anyone seeking additional protection drink boiled water or a safe alternative. For these at-risk populations, water intended for drinking, washing fruits and vegetables, making beverages or ice, or brushing teeth should be boiled for one minute. Boiled water should then be refrigerated in a clean, covered container.
Water Turbidity is continuously monitored and is published on our website – www.bmid.ca. Interior Health has been informed, and the public will be notified when conditions change or water quality has improved. It is expected that all of the higher turbidity water will be flushed through the system in four days.
BMID apologizes for any inconvenience this advisory might cause, and appreciates your cooperation and patience during this time. If you have any questions, contact Black Mountain Irrigation District at (250) 765-5169. As an alternative, contact Interior Health Authority at (250) 868-7834 or www.interiorhealth.ca.
