Subject: Water Quality Advisory – Black Mountain Irrigation District
Please be advised that the Black Mountain Irrigation District has issued a Water Quality Advisory for the entire BMID service area. The Water Quality Advisory is due to higher than normal levels of turbidity in the water reaching the BMID water distribution system.
BMID relies on Mission Creek for our drinking water. The recent warm weather has resulted in higher flows in Mission Creek. During last year’s wet spring, the creek banks became unstable and have not yet stabilized. Our treatment process is not able to remove all of the turbidity; however our chlorination system has not been compromised. The addition of Ultraviolet disinfection that is planned for BMID should help to alleviate this type of event in the near future.
Turbidity levels of between 1.5 and 2.0 turbidity units are expected. Please note that this level of turbidity may not be visible to the eye. BMID monitors raw water bacteria levels in Mission Creek which remain low. BMID also monitors bacteria after disinfection which continues to be zero.
Interior Health and BMID recommend that all customers seeking a higher level of protection should take extra precautions at this time. For infants, elderly, people with weakened immune systems, and anyone seeking a higher level of protection, BMID and Interior Health recommend that they boil their drinking water or take extra precautions. Note: Water should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute to achieve optimum disinfection.
The public will be notified when conditions change or water quality has improved. BMID apologizes for any inconvenience this Water Quality Advisory may cause, and appreciates your patience during this time. If you have any questions, contact Black Mountain Irrigation District office at (250) 765-5169.
